Exercises

Below are some activities you can try with your own materials to test your scanning and optical character recognition skills.


Scan a graphic image to insert in a web page Use the scanner and PhotoDeluxe or PhotoShop software to scan an image and then place it into your web page. You may want to refer to Scanning with PhotoDeluxe or Scanning with PhotoShop for step-by step instructions. Refer to Adding Images to Your Web Pages for help with HTML coding for image tags.
Scan a photograph to insert in a web page Use the scanner and PhotoDeluxe or PhotoShop software to scan a photograph and then place it into your web page. Scan at 96 dpi for 1 to 1 use, scan at a higher than screen resolution for a larger image, scan at a lower resoultion for a smaller image. Scale the final image to about wallett size (2 x 3) @ 96dpi and save as .gif or .jpg You may want to refer to Scanning with PhotoDeluxe or Scanning with PhotoShop for step-by step instructions. Refer to Adding Images to Your Web Pages for help with HTML coding for image tags.
Scan an image to insert into a PowerPoint presentation Use the scanner and PhotoDeluxe or PhotoShop software to scan an image and then place it into a PowerPoint presentation. You may want to refer to Scanning with PhotoDeluxe or Scanning with PhotoShop for step-by step instructions. Refer to Inserting Images into PowerPoint Presentations for help inserting images into PowerPoint files.
Use the Nikon slide scanner to capture a slide or negative image Use the slide scanner and PhotoShop software to scan a slide or negative. You may want to refer to Scanning with PhotoShop for step-by step instructions on what to do with the image once scanned.
Scan a signature for use in Microsoft Word Scan a signature at 300 -600 dpi grayscale. Adjust levels and save as grayscale .tif. or Convert mode to bitmap with 50% threshold and save as .tif. You may want to refer to Scanning with PhotoDeluxe or Scanning with PhotoShop for step-by step instructions.
Scan a logo and make it transparent Scan a logo on a solid color background. Copy to a layer, delete original layer, select background with magic wand and delete.
file/export as transparent .gif file. You may want to refer to Scanning with PhotoDeluxe or Scanning with PhotoShop for step-by step instructions.
Use scanning and OCR software to capture text to a Word file Use the scanner and OmniScan Lite software to scan text and perfrom optical character recognition. You may want to refer to OCR with OmniScan Lite for step-by step instructions.
